Pocket PC Animated Themes

Animated Themes were created in the year 2001 by Gigabyte Solutions Ltd. Animated Themes are standard .tsk themes files that have extra files included such as a Macromedia Flash animation which is shown on the Today screen.

There are now thousands of Animated Themes available and they all required the Animated Today themes player available from www.animatedthemes.com.

Animated Theme variations

There are three different types of Animated Themes, which related to the different release of Animated Today, which are:

Animated Today Version 1 Themes

Animated Today version1 themes used a proprietary theme format rather than the standard .tsk file format. They were designed for Pocket PC 2000 devices and therefor only supported a solid color Today screen with no background image.

Animated Today 2002 Themes

Animated Today 2002 themes were designed for Pocket PC 2002 devices and includes support for background images on the Today screen. Because Animated Today did not support transparency in the theme files, Theme Authors had to embed the Today background image into the Flash Animation.

The consequences of this are that theme files are much bigger than they need to be and unless the user has the same number of plugins enabled as the theme author designed the theme for, the background image contained in the Flash animation may be out of alignment with the background image of the Today screen.

Animated Today 3 / 4 Themes

To overcome the problems of embedded background images present in Animated Today 2002 themes, Animated Today 3 introduced the concept of transparent themes. With Animated Today 3 themes, the theme author only needs to include the animation component and not the background image.

Animated Today 3 display correctly no matter how many Today plugins the user has installed.
